I remember hesitantly asking a friend, “Do you ever feel numb about life, work and sometimes even God?” I asked the question because that is how I was feeling. I didn’t think that I was burnt out or depressed. I simply didn’t feel anything at all.
I was shocked when they said they completely understood. They suggested that I slow down, get some rest and spend some extended quiet time with God. Because “numb” is a warning sign.
“Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor serving the Lord.” Romans 12:11
If you’re like me, you wrestle with the extremes: too much or too little. Going 100 miles an hour or hitting a wall. I don’t think this verse is calling us to an extreme or unhealthy zeal. Because that leads to exhaustion and burnout.
How is your zeal for God? Is it balanced? Does it fuel the way you serve God and others? Does it fuel the time you spend alone with God? If you’re feeling “numb” today, for whatever reason, take some time to breathe and be alone with God. I pray that God breathes new life and peace into your heart so that you can find joy as you serve Him and others with an authentic, healthy zeal.
