I was in the hot seat recently when a friend (who isn’t a believer) asked a politically charged question. It started with, “How can you Christians…..” As I thought of argument winning responses, this verse came to mind:
“Always be prepared to give an answer when asked for the reason for the hope that you have. But do so with gentleness and respect.”
1 Peter 3:15
God reminded my heart to be gentle and respectful with my words. The goal wasn’t to win. It was to love. And I need that reminder often.
We didn’t agree on everything we discussed that day. But it was a safe place for both of us to navigate difficult waters together.
When we speak with gentleness and respect, people not only hear our words, but they hear, and see, the love of God.
So speak truth today and love so loudly that they hear your Father’s heart. – Sandi
